loona is a south korean girl group formed by blockberry creative. they were introduced through a predebut project where each member was revealed in a periodic fashion (each member released a solo album each month beginning in 2016, ending in 2018), hence the meaning of their korean name, 이달의 소녀 (girl of the month).

their korean name is 이달의 소녀 (idarui / idalui sonyeo) which means girl of the month (이/i - this; 달/dal - month/moon; 소녀/sonyeo - girl) and is usually shortened to 이달소 (idalso). when you group the first character of each letter [like this: ㅇㄷㅇㅅㄴ] and scramble them to make ㄴㅇㅇㄷㅅ, it looks like LOOΠΔ. loona also sounds like luna, which means the roman goddess of the moon, the name of earth’s moon, and the spanish word for moon. loona is also commonly stylized as LOOΠΔ with the greek letters pi and delta instead of n and a, so it’s read as LOOPD (looped).

loona consists of (in order of debut) heejin, hyunjin, haseul, yeojin, vivi, kim lip, jinsoul, choerry, yves, chuu, gowon, and olivia hye. each member has a representative color and animal that is important in the loonaverse. the group has three sub-units: loona ⅓ (heejin, hyunjin, haseul, vivi), odd eye circle (kim lip, jinsoul, choerry), and yyxy (yves, chuu, gowon, olivia hye). the fandom name is orbit.
